Terrell Hills is located in Bexar County, about five miles to the northeast of the city of San Antonio. Terrell Hills, an incorporated suburban community, neighbors Alamo Heights.

Formally incorporated in 1939, Terrell Hills was named after Frederick Terrell, who determined the area should be used residentially as early as 1920.
The population boomed in 1960 when it reached 5,500. The population of Terrell Hills steadily declined since then to reach a low of 4,600 in the 1990s. The population has been increasing since then, with a current population of around 5,400.
